The research proposal is an outline of your proposed research that is designed to:

• Formulate and define a clear, interesting research question; this may take the form of a hypothesis to be tested or open-ended questions

• Establish the relevance and value of the proposed research question(s) in the context of current academic thinking, highlighting its originality and significance

• Outline a clear and practical methodology which enables you to answer the research question(s), and to describe and evaluate any data or source material you will draw upon

• Suggest what you hope to discover at the end of your research and what new areas it might open up

• Provide a provisional timeline of your research

The structure of the research proposal should include:

• Title Page – a working title of your proposed research; this may not be the finalized title of your research project, but must show that you have thought through what you are hoping to achieve.

• Introduction- you should discuss the background to the study, research problem (i.e. problem statement) and research significant (i.e. rationale for the study).

• Literature Review – the proposal should demonstrate that you are aware of the important issues, themes and debates in the relevant literature, identifying existing gaps (both theoretical and practical). You must refer to key articles and texts and briefly show that you understand how they are relevant to your research area. It must be an original piece of work. You should demonstrate that your proposed area has not been studied before.

• Research Questions and objectives – what are the key questions your research will be focusing on and seeking to answer? If you have a hypothesis, what is it?

• Methodology – what methods of investigation are you planning to utilise within the research (whether a quantitative or a qualitative or a mixed-method), provide some justification for why they are most appropriate, and the limits and potential you envisage

• Timeline/Research Planning – an outline of the timescale of the research, indicating how long different tasks are envisaged to take, and the sequence of the project in the time available

• References – you need to include a list of references of articles and texts cited in the proposal following the APA referencing standard.
