The purpose of this exercise is to gain experience regarding the debriefing process. Review figure 13.1. Assume that you are the raft guide for this trip and that the situation in figure 13.1 occurs, except no one drowns. The trip is over. You notice that the person who had this less-than-optimum experience is moping around the lodge. Their body language conveys that their experience was not good. You consider approaching this person with the possibility of intervening.

1. The purpose of this exercise is to explore the ethical issue regarding whether you should intervene as well as to gain experience in the debriefing process. Should you approach this person to see if you can do anything to help in terms of the trip and the experience? Explain why you should or should not approach them.
2. Review the debriefing and the funneling sections in this chapter and the debriefing steps. Using the funneling process, lay out a general approach in which you identify the steps that you will use and the questions you will ask or points you will make to the participant.
3. Jane Doe in figure 13.1 had a very bad experience and long-term repercussions, including refusing to go rafting again. Do you think you could rectify this situation or at least increase the chances that she would go rafting again? Explain why or why not.
