Statistical Exploration Total Points: 25 Points Objectives: 1) Become more culturally aware and sensitive to the effects of culture on the health beliefs and practices of underrepresented ethnic groups in the United States. 2) Evaluate effectiveness of the delivery of health and human services systems in meeting the needs of the major ethnic groups in the United States. 3) Describe the nature and extent of health disparities between the majority population and the major ethnic groups. Goal: Compare a key health indicator for two (2) major population groups and identify and explain potential contributing factors. Potential Resources: 1) Textbook 2) Scholarly articles 3) Credible organization or government sources (accessible on the Internet) 4) Digital Lectures or 5) PowerPoint presentation “How Healthy Are We?†where different health status statistics are portrayed and how one group compares with another. Step 1: Identify one specific health factor of interest. The main factors are Health Status, Health Risk Factors, Vaccinations, Access to Health Care, and Mortality. Please feel free to research a more specific health issue (e.g. infant mortality, obesity, diabetes, depression, premature births, etc). Next, identify population groups who might show differences in these health factors. Population groups can be different based on age, ethnicity, geographical location, or another unique cultural characteristic. Step 2: Investigate the health factor and analyze how that factor compares and contrasts for two different cultural groups. Step 3 (5 points): Develop a table that presents the health factor, comparisons, and differences between the two (2) different cultural groups. Example: Infant Mortality Rates between Blacks and Whites. Step 4 (15 points): Write a 2-3 page summary paper describing your health factor, your findings/results, and implications of the data you compiled. Implications should discuss what it means about health across the cultural groups you studied, how macro-level systems factor into the results, and suggestions for resolving any problems you found. For example, if you discovered that rural middle-class females have higher rates of cancer, then you must describe (in detail) what may cause this, what effects it has on those individuals, their families, and society, how/why societal systems factor into the higher rate of cancer in this group, and realistic suggestions (low cost and easily distributed) to resolve this disparity. Step 5 (5 points): Answer the following (1-2 paragraphs)–How does this information relate to your work or field of interest? Describe how the information has or has not changed your view on the populations you researched. How can this information assist you in becoming a more culturally competent service provider?
