Minimum Turnaround Time Exercises

In the workbook, there are 4 exercises that require you to estimate the elapsed time it will take the ground crew to unload, clean and reload the aircraft for its’ next flight(“turnaround time”). There are also several examples to help you understand how the sequence of ground servicing works during a turnaround.

Study the examples to learn what activities take place inside the aircraft and which activities are occurring outside of the aircraft. Think in terms of production line where various work is taking place simultaneously in different parts of the factory but all components have to come together to produce the final product.

One of the concepts you will have to consider in these exercises is that of simultaneous or “concurrent” activities. I recognize most, if not all, of the class has no airline experience which would help you to know which activities can be done simultaneously. However, I suspect most everyone has flown at some point so you have some idea of how the turnaround process works.

In concurrent, or simultaneous, work, think about which activities can be accomplished at the same time. As an example, passengers cannot deplane and enplane at the same time. Cargo cannot be unloaded and reloaded at the same time. However, the interior of the aircraft can be cleaned at the same time various activities are occurring outside of the aircraft (such as unloading cargo). Where concurrent activities become difficult to assess is in “grey” areas such as maintenance. If maintenance is taking place in the aircraft cabin, as an example (i.e., repairing a seat) then obviously passengers cannot board the aircraft for the departing flight. Similarly, if maintenance is taking place in the vicinity of a cargo compartment, the ground staff will have to wait until the maintenance is complete before the cargo can be loaded (or even unloaded, depending on the nature of the maintenance).

While I recognize you do not have specific knowledge about concurrent or simultaneous activities, I have included an area in the following answer grids for you to provide a short explanation of why you think an activity is concurrent or not. I brief explanation is sufficient. See the example explanations for the scope of what an acceptable response would be. During grading of these worksheets, the focus will be on your logic more than a correct or incorrect answer. I’m not looking for right or wrong answers versus how you viewed the concurrent or non-concurrent activities.

In each of the answer grids below, the assignment is to complete any of the boxes which are shaded in yellow, green or blue. The yellow cells are the primary data for each line item. The green cells will reflect the sum (or total) of the times for each of the major work areas (cabin interior, aircraft exterior, etc.). Finally, the blue cell is for your final answer as to the total turnaround time. Example exercise No. 1 in the workbook has been entered into the response grid below to help guide you in how to complete each worksheet. Refer to the Example in the Workbook to review how each number fits into the answer grid below.
