ESSAY 1 ASSIGNMENT
Using the feedback on your Essay 1 Outline, write a 4 to 5 page, double-spaced ESSAY for the following essay topic:
There have been many social, cultural, intellectual, and technological developments in the twentieth
century. Artists’ responses to those developments have been diverse, and each artistic approach reveals
a different belief in the role that art can play in society. Write a paper that identifies and examines
three different ways that art can play a valuable role in contemporary life and society using three distinct
artworks by three different artists* as examples to support your argument. Conclude your essay by
explaining which approach you feel is the most important and significant.
*Choose only artists that have been discussed in the course readings, slide lectures, or viewing assignments.
Your essay should have a standard essay structure with: introductory paragraphs, a thesis explaining how you will
address the essay question, body paragraphs that provide arguments for your thesis, and a concluding section.
TIPS
? Read the essay question carefully! Make sure your thesis and examples address the essay question. The essay question is
asking you to think about roles that art can play in society.
? Come to my office hours to discuss your ideas and questions.
? Write about artworks that you like and arguments that you care about.

? I strongly encourage you to use the arguments and ideas presented in the readings, slide lectures, and viewing assignments
to demonstrate your knowledge of the course material. If you decide to cite material not discussed in the class, please use
the MLA Citation Guide posted in the Essay 2 folder in the Coursework section on Blackboard.
